Arby ’n’ the Chief, by DigitalPh33r

Toy Story meets Halo and LOLCATS

Master Chief likes to spend all day playing video games (very badly), going online to lolcats.com and watch pr0n. He is also an action figure based on the famous character from the Halo series. His daily routine is disturbed by the unexpected delivery of The Arbiter, another action figure with more common sense, courtesy and spelling skills than his grammatically-challenged and homophobic roommate. Through these unexpectedly endearing characters, the author spoofs typical abusive and stupid gamer behavior and offers insightful critiques of popular video games.

I CAN HAZ ROFLCOPTER – SOISOISOISOISOISOISOI!!1!!

This series features strong characterization, sharp dialogs, profound insights into gamer culture and a thorough mastery of leet speak. This more than makes up for the bad ligthing and blurry shots many "toy" scenes suffer from in Season 1.

John Graham, alias DigitalPh33r is a rising star in the world of Machinima. His unique take on Machinima, mixing live-action shots using toys crudely manipulated by hand with in-game shots, is surprisingly effective. Most of all, his innovative use of the text-to-speech voices in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP to dub the dialogs of his main characters is pure genius. These artificial voices have been completely pwned now as one can no longer listen to the voice of Microsoft Sam without actually hearing the voice of Master Chief. I must also point-out that John’s voice acting skill while impersonating X-Box Live players adds a lot to the realism/suspension of disbelief of the series.

We can see glimpses of John in Arby ‘n’ The Chief – The Movie and he is shockingly young for someone of such talent. Looking at the impressive stats from his YouTube channel (at the time of this writing: #6 most subscribed director (all time) in Canada, #59 globally), it is clear that he has become an Internet phenomenon. This success story was clearly made possible by the “YouTube” era and the support of Halo players and Machinima community (Arby ’n’ the Cheif is a featured series on Machinima.com.)

Master Chief Quotes

Master Chief is a semi-literate “Leet” gamer who expresses himself entirely in chat jargon, trash talk and LOLCAT syntax. Here are some prize examples:

  • This r not gud (This is not good.)
  • Who dusnt hav ten dol3rz?/ (Who doesn’t have 10 dollars?)
  • I dun undrst4nd the difrense (I don’t understand the difference.)
  • Cock of Doody 4 (Call of Duthy 4)
  • So u cn pleh ur stuped supar Barbie poly pokit brotharz gaem? (So you can play your stupid Barbie Poly Pocket Brothers game/Super Mario Smash Brothers Brawl Game)

Enough of this crap. Let’s watch some videos!

It is a sad and well known fact that episodes 9 to 11, as well as the movie, suck balls. This is mostly because the author made the common mistake of wishing to “evolve” the formula and introduce a slew of other characters. Most importantly, because of “upgrades”, these characters used the author’s real voice instead of the synthesized voices that made Master Chief, Arbiter and Cortana so interesting. This made for a loss of focus and an overall lackluster experience for this otherwise excellent series.

Thankfully, DigitalPh33r listed to his fans and got rid of the interlopers in episode 12. It now appears that this excellent series is back on track. Long live Arby ‘n’ the Chief!

[Update - October 16, 2009] Well... The Arby n’ the Chief series is now officially over. It’s sad to see these guys go, but it was time to put this once great series out of its misery. Season 2 and 3 were mostly disappointing with the "Party" episode probably the most true to the original concept, so here it is:

Season 3, Episode 10: Party
