Maps of War

For years, I’ve been looking for a simple way to visualise the rise and fall of humanity’s empires, in sequence, on a world map. This is exactly what MapsOfWar.com has managed to accomplish!

Maps-of-War is created by a Flash-Designer hobbyist and professional history-buff. It uses the power and simplicity of Flash animations with a YouTube-like sharing feature to great effect (see below for embedded maps).

Imperial History of the Middle Easts

Who has controlled the Middle East over the course of history? Pretty much everyone. Egyptians, Turks, Jews, Romans, Arabs, Persians, Europeans...the list goes on. Who will control the Middle East today? That is a much bigger question.

History of Religion

How has the geography of religion evolved over the centuries, and where has it sparked wars? This map gives us a brief history of the world’s most well-known religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Selected periods of inter-religious bloodshed are also highlighted. Want to see 5,000 years of religion in 90 seconds? Ready, Set, Go!

NOTE: These maps may appear as a white space on slow internet connections. The map will load after a few seconds. Please be patient!

That’s not all!

MapOfWar.com also features many more animated maps dealing with past and current war-related issues, such as:

- Which Presidents have led the United States into its deadliest wars?
- The anatomy of a CIA secret prison

And more...
